Review
The story of the Hulk is picked up with Bruce Bana (Hulk) on the run from the military, he is trying to find a cure for the mutation which turns him into the angry green beast. Through the course of the film Bruce Bana, played by Ed Norton, becomes increasingly more desperate to find a way to cure himself. This journey brings him into contact with the military, his true love (Liv Tyler) and the insanely grotesque beast Abomination, which has the same strength and power as the Hulk.
The plot is simple enough, what it lacks is orginality. It is the same anti-hero motivational storyline which can be found throughout Stan Lees Marvel comics, a writing style that ensures sympathy for the character and a subconcious justification for their actions however grotesque. Stan Lee is always careful to ensure that his lead characters do not commit actions against innocents (women, children) or find themselves in morally repugnant situations. Ang Lee's 2003 version of The Hulk stood out for some with its emotional narrative of the Hulk character at the expense of powerful and dramatic action. This 2008 'sequel' to the film is less of a follow up and more of a re-invention. The Incredible Hulk is a far more impressive modern take on the character. Where this film excels is the unbeliveable action sequences which left me awe inspired and hungry for more. The art of character driven special effects is professionally delivered with the The Hulk looking truly Incredible. The movement and co-ordination of real backgrounds with CGI is hard to fault, only a couple of scenes looked overdone. Comic books and their movies are supposed to be an escape from the benign reality of life. They are supposed to be fun, imaginative and otherwordly. The Incredible Hulk captures this spirit of adventure and creative imagination without losing credibility. The only aspects of the film which let the audience down are Ed Nortons and Liz Tylers always bland and average performances and the stories lack of originality. The Hulk is a fun, entertaining special effects masterpiece, which will blow your socks off and entertain you thoroughly for two hours. People
