Seth Rogen and James Franco star in this action comedy about two friends who inadvertently become involved in a drug war with amusing but deadly consequences.

For Seth Rogen this is another bumbling, charismatic performance. The Canadian native is funny and silly in a warmly entertaining way. His insecure, boyish humour has gained popularity with audiences who are swayed by his down-to-earth appeal. Thankfully, he has mixed up his live action roles with animation voice work, to keep his career fluid.

James Franco is surprisingly good as a small time drug dealer with a marijuana clouded view of life. He provides a lot of the necessary substance for the acting and emotion. This is a goofier more relaxed character than previous role choices. It shows that his classic movie looks are complimented by a sense of humour.

The film is supported well enough, although there is some over-acting as you would expect from a comedy movie based on 'smoking weed' and 'getting high'.

Pineapple Express was an entertaining enough film with some funny moments, but it felt too much like its ambitions were for a low budget feel. The film therefore ended up suffering from a lack of direction and plot. Independent films often make up for their lack of budget with excellent writing, more risky plots and original acting. A lot of the action in the film was unrealistic and silly, with little originality in their conception.

The acting was overall funny and there were some good lines. However I was unmoved by the its 'funny to get high' mantra which dominated the film. Pineapple Express narrowly avoided pigeon holing itself into a category of film that appeals to a specific demographic. Luckily the charm of the leads, combined with some entertaining moments kept things puffing along.
