Review

Hancock is Will Smith's latest vehicle and it sees him take on the role of a not-so-perfect superhero. A character whose effectiveness at combating crime is undone by the damage and offense he causes during his shambolic rescues.

Hancock meets a well intentioned publicist Ray, while saving him from a near fatal railway accident. They form an unlikely friendship and Ray convinces Hancock to let him help improve his image by turning over a new leaf, giving up the booze and sorting out his life.

Charlize Theron comes into the picture as Ray's suspicious wife, concerned about Hancock’s random and unreliable behaviour around her husband.

The problem with Hancock is it has too many different plots interweaved into a very fragile concept. Superhero movies rely on the suspension of disbelief. The audience has to be prepared to ride the coattails of fantasy for a couple of hours in order for us to be entertained.

Success has come to the comic film genre, with the advent of incredible computer generated imagery. CGI looks more and more realistic with every film that comes out (with a few exceptions). The realism allows an audience to justify the fantasy and keep their feet firmly planted on the popcorn crusted floor.

Where Hancock fails is a complete lack of common sense. There are too many elements and plot points at work. Also Will Smiths charming character is hidden under the ugly and often mean traits of his characters personality.

As an audience we do not have the patience to watch a superhero confess his sins at an AA meeting unless it is done in a really funny way.

The special effects in the film are very good and seem quite effortless. They do keep the film rumbling along to a certain degree.

My biggest complaint about Hancock is the strange tangent it takes in the middle, positively skewing the momentum of the film.

Without spoiling the movie, the unexpected twist in the story is unjustified, strange and stupid. It is such a shame that the first 30 minutes of the film didn’t dictate the theme and feel of the movie. Will Smith's charisma does shine through at various points and a more consistent feel could have ended up making this a fun film.

I mean after all who doesn’t like the idea of a drunk superhero, who doesn’t quite get things right?

As my good friend and co-creator of RER pointed out at our joint viewing ‘It looks like the producers have been at this film with a pair of shears!’ I fear he may well be correct.

In conclusion, a disappointing action/comedy let down by a stupid script, random plot and overly edited final cut.
