Review
American Gangster is a truly great film. In an era when films seem to be trying their best to shock and entertain us in more extreme ways every year, it is refreshing to watch a film that hits all the right notes in the right key. This without resorting to gratuitous violence, heart-stopping horror or offensive humour.

Ridley Scott, has directed many classic films - Gladiator, Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma and Louise to name but a few. His strength seems to lie in action films where he always seems to follow strong characters. The main players are often vexed by inner demons but able to discover nobility within themselves through their journey on screen.

Denzel Washington plays Harlem drug overlord Frank Lucas. The 53 year old actor only seems to get better with age. He is simply brilliant as a man whose direct and resourceful work ethic allows him to build a powerful drug empire, and considerable fortune by going direct to the source (Vietnam).

He is charming, yet brutal. Cool and yet dispassionate about the victims of his drug-trafficking. However we are given enough of a look at his family 'devotion' and the brutal world in which he has grown up to build sufficient sympathy for his character.

Russell Crowe is excellent as an awkward, misfit cop whose life is disorderly and hurtful to those around him (cheats on his wife). His devotion to a pure and moral work-ethic, leads him away from corruption and towards his murderous target - Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington).

Both actors are supported by an excellent cast and a superb script. The film is blessed with excellent set detail and a great wardrobe. This coupled with superb cinematography and adept direction make for an extremely satisfying film experience.

In conclusion, this is not an African American version of Scarface. This is unlike any other gangster film. What Goodfellas did with the Italian mobster story, Ridley Scott has done with the story of The Harlem Gangster.

Make no mistake this is a funky, badasssss, bullet-poppin, syringe filled, madcap adventure. American Gangster shows Denzel Washington at his peek- dripping with cool - head and shoulders above his rivals!!
