Along the way Rodney and his band of amusing misfits, called the Rusties, find themselves tackling with the frightening Madam Gasket (Jim Broadbent) and her son Ratchet (Greg Kinear) who has taken over Bigwelds (Mel Brooks) company and is turning it into a rich bots business eliminating the production of spare parts and putting Rodney's ill father in risk of being deactivated. Ewan McGregor leads an all star cast of actors in this enjoyable computer animated tale.
All of the actors including the hilarious Robin Williams entertain us with a lively script. The comeraderie between the characters is great with amusing side-jokes peppering the screen. What impressed me the most about this film was the originality of the ideas. Although the concept of an animated robot isn't truly original, the hilarious tongue-in-cheek jokes and quirky characteristics of the leads is more than enough to keep people of all ages entertained.
There are so many great ideas in the film, especially when Rodney arrives in the big city. His trip on the transport system is like an inventors dream come true with a host of crazy robotic mechanisms that whirl him all the way to Bigwelds front gate. The characters and animation are just plain fun, and with enough of a story to keep the anarchy moving in the right direction the audience is moved to care for the main characters and route for them in their fight against evil.
The animation itself is impressive with flawless composition and modeling. The only complaint I would have is the characters sometimes looked a little too CG and not quite realistic enough, however with today's overly protected society and the weird cartoons of old being a thing of the past, it is no real surprise to see less of the dark side of animation.
I really enjoyed this film and I think it appeals to all ages. It was amusing, fun and lovely to look at. There was great music and some excellent voice work from the cast. My only complaint would be that it could have been a little darker, longer and more real; but other than it was a wonderful animated adventure.
