The movie opens with a pounding bass that shook the Red Eye Review viewing lounge, twinned with the shaky camera effect followed by the shooting of the main character. So, movie over? Not quite. This is a typical bad kid done good movie shot with through the eyes of Marcus (50 Cent) and while I don't know much about 50 Cent I am assuming that some aspects of his life are mirrored in this movie, like being a drug dealer, being shot nine times and ending up a rap star. As movies go this isn't bad, the acting is above average and the story despite being simple to follow leads you around until the inevitable conclusion, but during that time the ride isn't bad. The music is well used and its effect is substantial. This reminded me of watching other 'gangsta' type movies and while it was clinically performed, shot and edited well there was something lacking, something that New Jack City had a lot of, especially with Chris Rock and Ice-T. The movie ends much in the same way as it started with the bass and camera effect, the circle being completed. For fans of 50 Cent, this is a must. For those who aren't, check it out anyway. Expect to see more from Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson in the future.
