Doom is a film based on the computer game that birthed the modern first-person shooter genre of PC games. The story follows a squadron of marines as they set out to eliminate an unknown alien presence on Mars. The film's premise is that many years ago mankind discovered a portal which enabled them to travel to a twin portal on Mars. After years of colonizing, a team of scientists disappears with frightful video messages left as their final testament. The Rock (Dwayne Johnson), stars with Karl Urban and up and coming actress Rosamund Pike in this alien action film with guns and glory. The Rock is an entertaining and worthy successor to the throne of bulky action destroyer vacated by Arnie/Sly/Bruce. He is charismatic and confident on camera, having produced some dynamic and comedic characters in a burgeoning movie career. Only time will tell if he is capable of producing any more substance from his wrestling crafted action muscles. In this latest action thriller The Rock doesn’t get a chance to demonstrate his natural showmanship and athletic talents, because there wasn’t enough action written into the movie. There were many missed opportunities for stylish action and destructive mayhem. The cast wasn’t really the problem, there were some solid and talented individuals on screen, however there was simply too much suspense and not enough action. The director is an experienced cinematographer with a long list of successful films under his belt. As a director he has only been in the seat five times with average results. It would seem that this is another average action film to add to his resume (with the exception of Romeo Must Die). This film was dull. My expectations weren’t particularly high however it was still a disappointment to see a waste of talent. This seems to be a theme with computer game inspired movies, there always seems to be a lack of decent material to pad out the story. If you are going to make a pulpy action thriller, try to do it with intelligence. Make sure there is enough action and mayhem to ride over the lack intelligent script, we don’t always have to be educated but if we want entertainment it needs to be bold. Technically the film was interesting and had a couple of funky special effects, however I wasn’t impressed with the lighting – too dark, or the music – to clichéd. In conclusion, you would be better off renting something else! If you are a fan of The Rock, try The Rundown or Scorpion King – if you are more interested in computer game based action, you could do worse than the resident evil series.
