A really basic storyline for this movie combined with fast co-ordinated fighting techniques and comedy moments thrown in. Chris Vaughn (The Rock, The Scorpion King) is the main character returning home after being in the U.S. Army. Famous for being a WWE world champion this movie was made for The Rock as his character takes on a group of men effortlessly with no stunts required! For a solid guy The Rock can sure move and is your typical action hero. The comedy side to this movie is delivered mainly by character Ray Templeton (Johnny Knoxville, Big Trouble) a childhood friend of Chris's who has a chequered past. Johnny of Jackass fame worked in synch alongside The Rock as the kick ass duo and with the help of their genuine on screen friendship. Johnny carried off most of his scenes humorously even the action scenes are unbelievably funny with a crazy tune to match. The bad guy in this movie is blue eyed golden boy Jay Hamilton (Neil McDonough, Timeline) who is trying to turn a small town into a mini Las Vegas. Neil is a smaller guy than The Rock so you cannot help but give him credit for going up against Rock in this movie’s violent scenes. He plays the dodgy businessman convincingly and with those sharp blue eyes he does not need muscles! Neil portrays the characteristics of Jay accurately by expression throughout the movie from friendly to threatening. There is a dash of romance in this movie, Deni (Ashley Scott, Into the Blue) a former girlfriend of Chris Vaughn. Ashley’s role is short and sweet throughout the movie however she keeps the male viewers entertained! The rest of the Vaughn family have minor roles are parents Chris Vaughn Sr (John Beasley, Crazy in Alabama), Connie Vaughn (Barbara Tarbuck, The Tie That Binds), sister Michelle Vaughn (Kristen Wilson, Ritual) and Nephew Pete Vaughn (Khleo Thomas, Time Out). This onscreen family are awful and deflated the movie, if there was a sequel recasting this family would be a smart move. The soundtrack is varied from Johnny Cash’s 10 Feet High and Rising to electronic, sensual sounds of New Order’s Blue Monday. All of the tracks played compliment each scene perfectly, the location shots of Washington state also add emotion with an eerie emptiness of the harbour and mountains that surround the tranquil area. A reasonable short movie to catch at your leisure with no shortage of muscle!
