Closer depicts a love story between Dan (Jude Law) and Alice (Natalie Portman) who have a chance meeting in London after Alice is knocked down by a car. Time moves on and Dan is writing his first novel. That's when he meets Anna (Julia Roberts) during a photo shoot. It becomes apparent to Alice that Dan has feelings for Anna. Dan doesn't have what it takes to make Anna fall for him. Another accidental chance meeting occurs between Larry (Clive Owen) and Anna and romance flourishes.
So far so good, now the complicated crossovers between the four characters. A mix of heady romance, sex and lies follows breaking and reforming relationships.
The acting is excellent and does the play justice, with just enough performance from each person to make the story believable and not over the top. You can believe that this is real at times and are able to feel the pull each has to each other. The overwhelming damage caused by deceit is always there ready to burst the cosy bubble of romance and love.
Give this a watch if you can, you won’t be displeased. Remember that this is based on a play and at times you could be mistaken for being in a theatre.
