Se7en is a mixture of two genres the cop action thriller and horror suspense. Each scene drips with suspense and dark meaning as the two main characters try to solve the mystery of a serial killer using the seven deadly sins as a MO. Morgan Freeman plays a retiring cop who is sick of the murder and mayhem he sees around him, Brad Pitt plays his energetic headstrong replacement looking for a change. The feel and look of this film is great, there is real sense of gritty urban struggle, which anyone who has lived in a big city will identify with. It also hammers rain through out the entire film (until the very last scene) and the murder victims are grotesque and hideously mutilated. The films score is ominous and powerful which builds tension as the film progresses. The choice of score and the biblical nature of the film, really evoke a powerful emotion in the viewer which coupled with a cold and evil performance from Kevin Spacey and a great performances from the rest of the cast successfully produce the desired response. This is a great film without reaching the echelons of a classic (Usual Suspects), it brings together all the essential elements of film-making and leaves the watcher with a powerful feeling and a thoughtful after-thought.
