Schindler's List is based on the true story of Oscar Schindler a suave sophisticated German industrialist who in the last few years of the war against Europe, opens a factory to seek his fortune off the slave labour of the Jews. He becomes more entwined with the architecture of the Nazi party, led by the callous Ralph Fiennes, and spends more time with his Jewish workers especially the understated Ben Kingsley. As he becomes more aware of the sharp moral conflict his conscience slowly wares away his greed, and gives way to a profoundly more human and sympathetic emotion.
The above summary does not do true justice to the enormous impact of this film. It is a work of art. From the incredible lighting and cinematography to the perfect score and powerful acting.
Spielberg does an incredible job of mixing the shocking brutality and humiliation of prisoners by Nazi Soldiers contrast with the subtle emotional interaction of the Jewish prisoners and Schindler with his arrogant flair and repressed emotion.
This is more than a film about one incredible man who saved over 1100 Jews from the gas chamber. It is all a film about the horror, degradation and brutality of war. The mindless violence, dehumanizing and racial abuse, suffered by the Jews during this dark time in history.
Spielberg also tells the story well, with few if any moments of boredom, incredible attention to detail, and topped off by a very moving finish to the movie; which brought home the true meaning of the film. The horror of war and the necessity for tolerance and value for all life.
